When Central Pacific tracks reached Penryn, granite blocks from the Griffith Quarry could be transported to Sacramento and San Francisco to be used in constructing major buildings. Stone blocks from the Penryn quarry were used in the main support walls of the San Francisco U.S. Mint that was built in the 1870’s. That building withstood the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and subsequent fire. Penryn granite is clearly visible today in the building’s foundation stonework.
